Facebook Surpasses Google In Global Alexa Ranking
Alexa
Alexa is an Amazon owned company. It was founded in 1996, however Amazon acquired it in 1999. The Alexa website has data of about 30 million websites.
Alexa Ranking
Alexa collects data via its toolbar on the users’ browsing behavior. The toolbar transmits it to the Alexa website, where it is stored and analyzed to give an accurate web traffic reporting. The Alexa website statistics gives an insight of the global rank as well as country specific ranks. Furthermore it also gives statistics according to various search results, demographics, etc.
The Alexa Toolbar includes a search box, the Alexa homepage with other links, and the Alexa ranking of the site that the user is visiting.
Facebook Surpasses Google In Global Alexa Ranking
Facebook has finally surpassed Google in global Alexa ranking and has maintained for over a week now. I took a screen capture on July 18th, 2013 of the global site ranks:
The image shows that Facebook is ranked number 1 on top sites globally.
And the screen capture today (July 22nd, 2013) clearly shows that it has maintained the position since.
This is a great news for Facebook as a site which is live for less than 10 years has surpassed Google which has been on the internet for a very long time (since January 1996). (We might even see a rise in Facebook stock prices)
This is not the first time someone has threatened the giant, Google. Before this incident, Page Rank was taken seriously but as soon as Google’s Page rank went down to 9 after Twitter got the prime position, Google declared that Page Rank was not of importance any more.
Now, we have to see that whether Alexa ranks will be void as Facebook surpasses Google in global Alexa ranking.

I spend most of my time on fb, and anyone who is on facebook could’ve forecasted this. I think that the Alexa rank is calculated on the basis of logged in users and activity? Please correct me if I’m wrong. (BTW, any idea as to how can I increase the alexa ranks of my clients? I’m a web designer and a budding SEO adviser.)

You are right about the Alexa ranking to a certain extent. The Alexa rank for a website is determined by the traffic it gets plus the activity on the site.
So, if you need to increase the Alexa rank of a certain website, all you need to do is get quality traffic and lots of activity. And this can be achieved by good content.

Someone said that Facebook surpassed Google in something, so I Googled “Facebook Surpasses Google” and your website popped up on like number 2. I got a closure to my query after reading your post. Glad that you are an intense researcher because no one can predict about the stock prices and stuff like that. (at least I don’t have anyone in my group.) thanks for the info one again.
